Grow Together: Free Tree Pickup Event

Your new family tree has arrived and you can pick it up at Glen Park!

Time & Location

Apr 18, 2025, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Glen Park Entrance on Gilbert Barker , Gilbert Barker Rd, Portsmouth, RI 02871, USA

What To Expect

Ocean State Kids is one of 1,380 organizations across North America that are participating in the Neighborhood Forest 16th Annual Free Tree Program! We are part of one of the largest and fastest-growing tree-planting initiatives involving youth! Collectively, Neighborhood Forest is going to be giving 112,000+ kids their very own tree to plant during Earth Week (April 22-29).

Ocean State Kids will be giving out 50 trees, and your family will be receiving the native WHITE PINE tree and they get HUGE, so please read below.

TREE PICK-UP EVENT:

The trees are arriving to Portsmouth, RI on Thursday April 17th, so we will be hosting a pick-up event at Glen Park in Portsmouth, Rhode Island from 9:00 am - 11:00 am. There is a small playground at Glen Park and a really beautiful short forest hiking trail down to the beach! So please come and enjoy the park, especially if you are driving near and far. We will have a few activities set up; some sensory tables, painting, and whatever else we can whip up last minute. Peace of mind: the trees are small, the fit in a paper bag -- so don't stress about lugging any large cargo back to your house!

If you can't pick up your tree, please e-mail marial@oceanstatekids.com.

DIRECTIONS TO THE LOCATION

The trees will be set up under the Pavilion. Google Maps might take you to various different spots in the park, so you can use this Google Pin Here, or enter Gilbert Barker Rd, Portsmouth, RI 02871, USA -- Gilbert Barker Road is off Glen Road (which is the intersecting light of East Main Road across from Annie's Cafe).

ABOUT THE MIGHTY WHITE PINE

The Eastern white pine is a tree for landscapes with ample space. Its fine feathery needles, open canopy, and straight trunk get more picturesque with age. Trees are fast-growing and long-lived.

Height of 50'-80' and spread of 20'-40' at maturity. Fast growing at more than 24" per year once established.

The eastern white pine grows in acidic, moist, well-drained and dry soils. While it does best in moist soil, the tree can has been known to tolerate everything from dry, rocky ridges to bogs.

Keep the soil moist. Water newly planted trees once a day for the first couple of weeks after planting, and once a week after that during the growing season. In subsequent years periodic deep watering is preferable over frequent light watering. Watering can be tricky! Learn more here.

Full sun and partial shade are best for this tree, meaning it prefers 6 hours of direct light daily and partial sun / shade 4-6 hours light daily.
