NATURE GUARDIANS

Alex Afonso
EDUCATOR & GROUP LEADER
East Bay Buds, Ocean State Kids
Alex is thrilled to be leading and teaching for multiple Ocean State Kids groups - where she can blend her passion for child-led learning with her love of the outdoors. Leader of our Forest Ferns group, Alex is a licensed PreK–8 teacher in Massachusetts with training in Orton-Gillingham reading instruction and experience as a K–4 math specialist.
After 8 years in the public school system, she chose to step away to raise her daughter and follow a path that better aligns with her values. She believes children thrive when given the freedom to play, explore, and learn through hands-on experiences—especially when they can get messy, take risks, and connect with the natural world.
Alex holds a B.A. in Human Development & Family Studies and a M.Ed. in Special Education (Moderate Disabilities).
A 200-hour certified yoga instructor, she brings mindfulness, movement, and a deep love of the outdoors to every gathering — because she believes nature is the best classroom there is.

• INVESTED FAMILIES
Nature Guardians are a select group of parents whose passion, dedication, and active involvement has significantly shaped Ocean State Kids. They are families that have demonstrated commitment to our mission and whose insight, voice, and leadership are highly valued and essential.
