Ocean State Kids recently embarked on a seaside adventure to Jamestown, where our mission was simple yet exhilarating—harvesting clams at low tide. Led by local fisherman, Stephan Dumont, the kids were armed with buckets, rakes, and boundless curiosity. The children dove into the sandy shores with the excitement of pirates seeking hidden treasure. Each clam unearthed was met with squeals of delight, laughter echoing as if they'd discovered gold coins buried deep beneath the surface. Meanwhile, parents quietly celebrated each find, secretly thrilled that tonight's dinner was secured by their enthusiastic little explorers.

Witnessing the children immerse themselves in this hands-on experience was profoundly beautiful. They connected with nature in a fresh, meaningful way, realizing for perhaps the first time exactly where food comes from. Their small fingers eagerly dug through the mucky sand, engaging in a sensory-rich activity that filled their senses with the textures and scents of the seaside. Each child’s unique strength shined through, from determined little diggers to cautious explorers who bravely overcame their hesitation to plunge their hands into the unknown.

The true secret power of the clam became evident that day—it brought us together, strengthening our bond with nature and our community. Without Ocean State Kids, we parents may never have ventured out onto those muddy shores, never dug into the mystery that lay beneath. In seeking unique, enriching experiences for our children, we stumbled upon a newfound appreciation for the treasures hidden in the ordinary moments. This adventure reminded us all of the joy, wonder, and connection that nature so generously offers.
